While creating a light-up face mask, Zachary Hardaway, a freshman in mathematics, gets assistance from Laura VanWaardhuizen, assistant teaching professor and family and consumer sciences education and studies program coordinator.

Teacher education students combined their knowledge of educational technology with creativity, coding, and e-textiles to design and complete the masks in their educational technology (EDUC 203X/303X/403X) class, taught by Larysa Nadolny, associate professor, and Aleman Ezequiel, graduate student, in the School of Education.

In response to the Ames school district’s move to online and hybrid classes to stem COVID-19, the Iowa State University Child Development Lab School is helping to take the education burden off working families. Highly qualified teachers in the lab school supplement the education of 14 children in kindergarten through third grade, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Lab school teachers assist young learners as they dive into their lessons and homework using their school-supplied laptops. While coaching each child to learn at their own pace in a safe and healthy environment, lab school teachers also help fill any learning gaps.

Enrollment in the lab school’s school-age program is full. The program was designed as a temporary measure but organizers are considering whether to accept more children down the road.

A virtual choir number sung by 170 people with Parkinson’s disease will debut live at 4 p.m. CT on Tuesday, September 8, online. The performers who sing to improve their motor symptoms — as well as stress and quality of life — were each recorded separately. The recordings were combined by a team of Iowa State University students who work in the neuromotor laboratory with Elizabeth Stegemöller, an associate professor of kinesiology.

The choir's rendition of “What the World Needs Now is Love” will debut live on Music and Mind LIVE with Renée Fleming, an online series which features the acclaimed singer in conversation with scientists and practitioners who work at the intersection of music, neuroscience, and healthcare.  The event can be viewed from the Iowa State University College of Human Sciences Facebook page, during the debut or any time after.

The People to People Career Fair and Business, Industry and Technology Career Fair will be held virtually on consecutive days this fall. Also new this fall is a requirement for students to register.
