Do I need to fill out the FAFSA?

We strongly encourage you to complete the FAFSA form. Many of our scholarships have a financial need component. If you do not complete the FAFSA, you are not considered for these scholarships.

Should I complete the FAFSA if my parents have a large income?

Even with a larger parental income, many students may be eligible for scholarships with a financial need component.

What tax year do I use for FAFSA information?

You use tax information from last year's taxes.

The next FAFSA application will be available beginning October 1 at the Federal Student Aid website. Complete your FAFSA by December 1 in order to be considered for priority aid at Iowa State University. For more information regarding the FAFSA, visit the Iowa State FAFSA webpage.

How many scholarship applications does the College of Human Sciences require me to fill out?

Just one application. The application will be used to award college-wide scholarships and department/school scholarships. Once you complete the online application, you are considered for 99% of CHS scholarships. Special circumstance scholarships not included in One App can be found on the CHS website.

Do I need to have a high GPA to apply for scholarships?

No, you do not need to have a high GPA for all scholarships. We encourage all students to apply, regardless of their GPA. 

If I have taken college classes while in high school, am I a transfer student?

No. If you have taken college credit classes during high school you are NOT a transfer student. You are an incoming freshman (direct from high school student). Please check the Direct from High School or Freshman box.

Who is a transfer student?

You are considered a transfer student if you have a high school diploma or G.E.D. and are currently enrolled at an institution of higher learning other than Iowa State University.

I’m not quite sure if I will attend ISU and/or I don’t know my major.  Should I apply for a CHS scholarship?

Yes, please complete the scholarship application form if you are exploring majors in the College of Human Sciences.

How are scholarships evaluated?

Each student’s scholarship application is evaluated by two faculty/staff reviewers. Each reviewer gives your application a score based on your essays, leadership experiences and extra-curricular activities. Your score also includes your GPA and credit hours.

What if I don’t know my GPA for fall semester? 

The Registrar’s Office will provide us with your GPA in early January. You can leave this field blank.

How are scholarships awarded to students?

Scholarships given by donors may have specific criteria. Examples include: major, financial need, residing in a specific county, demonstrated leadership, extra-curricular activities, work experience, GPA, etc. Scholarships are awarded to students who meet the criteria for the award.

How much money does the College of Human Sciences award in scholarships?

For the 2017-18 academic year, the college awarded over $1.5 million dollars in undergraduate, international, internship and graduate scholarships. Last year approximately 690 students received scholarships.

When will I know if I receive a scholarship?

Direct from high school and transfer students will receive a letter from our Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education starting  in February. Current students will receive an email no later than April 30.

What is the amount of an average scholarship?

The average scholarship is $1000 for the academic year.  $500 per semester.

Can I lose a scholarship once it is awarded?

If you no longer meet the criteria for the scholarship it will be removed from your U-bill. Examples include: change majors, change colleges, no demonstrated financial need, fall below a specified GPA, etc. You will be notified that your scholarship is being removed.

How can I increase the possibility of getting a scholarship?

Complete the FAFSA form, completely and accurately fill out the application form, do not leave fields blank, and carefully answer the essay questions.

If I receive a scholarship one year, will it be renewed the next year?

Your scholarship is NOT automatically renewed. You must complete the scholarship application each year. Most scholarships do not renew due to the specific criteria of the award.
